Two or three summers ago I was lucky to meet Elena Dickson and to be given a short tutorial on Knotted Lace from the Eastern Mediterranean. I didn't stick to it. I found it very difficult, but I know for some this is the perfect needle craft and will come easily.
Elena learned how to make this lace from her Greek mother-in-law. She was very interested in learning and picked it up in 6 months. So what's my problem? LOL!
She gave her mother-in-law her first completed handkerchief and the were both thrilled.
She showed me a few pieces made by her mother-in-law that she still uses as doilies on her bureau. I was amazed that she was still using them - I am neurotic about framing everything to preserve it. However, she believes in using what was created to be used. A sound philosophy in the tradition of those who made the lace to bring beauty and comfort to their homes.
Her doilies showed no wear. The strong thread and tiny knots used in this lace technique are very durable. And with her books this handwork will not be lost to us like so many others.
There are several books available on Amazon. And she is involved in the Australian Lace Guild - SA Branch.
